A Taste of Late Summer: Our Jam Jar Flower Arranging Workshops
There’s something special about late summer in the garden. Everything is still growing and flowering, but there’s a slightly different feel to it. Dahlias are putting on a spectacular show, cosmos are swaying in the breeze, seed heads are starting to appear and there’s an abundance of colour, texture and foliage to work with.
It’s the perfect time of year to get together and enjoy an afternoon of flower arranging.
Our seasonal jam jar flower arranging workshops are all about using what’s naturally available at that time of year to create a relaxed, informal arrangement to take home.
Flowers that celebrate the season
One of my favourite things about working with seasonal flowers is that no two workshops are quite the same.
For a late-summer workshop, the jam jars might be filled with dahlias, cosmos, sunflowers, scabious, rudbeckia, amaranthus, hydrangeas, verbena and grasses, alongside whatever lovely foliage is looking good in the garden.
Some flowers might be bold and colourful, while others are much more delicate. Putting them all together is where the fun begins.
Rather than everyone making an identical arrangement, I encourage people to experiment with different flowers, colours and textures. The result is that every jam jar is completely individual.
No floristry experience needed
You don't need to know anything about flower arranging to come along. The workshops are relaxed and suitable for beginners, with guidance throughout the process.
We’ll look at how to condition the flowers, choose a good combination of blooms and build an arrangement that works in a jam jar. I’ll share some simple floristry tips and techniques, but there’s plenty of opportunity to put your own stamp on your flowers too.
And, importantly, there’s no pressure to make it ‘perfect’.
Sometimes the most beautiful arrangements are the ones where you’ve just had a play with the flowers and discovered what works.
Seasonal flower arranging throughout the year
The jam jar workshops change with the seasons, so there’s always something different to work with.
In spring, there might be tulips, narcissi, blossom and other fresh spring flowers. Summer brings an abundance of colourful garden flowers, while autumn introduces rich colours, seed heads, berries and beautiful textured foliage.
Using seasonal flowers means that the arrangements feel connected to the time of year – and it also means we can make the most of whatever is naturally at its best.
